What To Do When The Movers Arrive
The time has come for you and your family to PCS. Your big trip is scheduled, and the movers just arrived. You might be wondering what to do when the movers are at your home. After all, it could take a few days to pack your house completely.
1. Before The Movers Arrive, Purge Your Home: You don't want to have to go through and purge when you're settling into your new home at your new duty station. Purging your household goods before hand means that the movers won't be packing away items you don't use anymore. This helps you manage your weight limit for your belongings, and ensuring you won't go over with unnecessary items.
2. When They Arrive: Give a tour of your home. Have items that will not be packed placed into a room marked with a sign that says, "DO NOT PACK." Be sure to show them this room and explain that that room will not be packed and loaded onto the moving truck. Show them the restroom. Set clear boundaries and ask questions if you have any.
3. As They Pack: Take photos of your belongings. Inventory your goods on your own for a personal record. If you prefer something to be repacked or have additional bubble wrap, don't be afraid to ask for it! This is your stuff, and you don't want it broken!
4. If You Plan To Provide Lunch/Snacks: Make sure to tell the movers if you plan to provide drinks, lunch and/or snacks. This way, they don't leave your home for a "lunch break". Remember, THIS IS NOT MANDATORY!
It can feel strange to watch people pack your belongings while you just sit back, but make sure to be attentive to what is happening. Ask questions if you have them. It is important to be there from start to finish, especially when they are done to go over paper work and the inventory!
