What is DLA?
As a military spouse, it can be confusing when your service member uses acronyms and terms we aren't necessarily familiar with. Lately we've seen a ton of talk about DLA; so, what exactly is it?
DLA stands for Dislocation Allowance.
The Purpose of Dislocation Allowance, or DLA, is to partially reimburse a service member, with or without dependents, for expenses that occurred during relocating their household on a PCS move. This allowance is in addition to other allowances authorized and may be paid in advance. It's important to remember that DLA is intended to partially reimburse relocation expenses that are not otherwise reimbursed.
In simpler terms, Dislocation Allowance is for the set up of your new home (household items, furniture, or travel expenses related to moving).
Some important Q&As Include:
Q: May a service member receive a dislocation allowance if ordered to occupy or vacate family-type Government quarters?
A: A Service member ordered to occupy or vacate family-type Government quarters due to privatization, renovation or any reason other than PCS receives a partial dislocation allowance. See the DTMO website for the current partial dislocation allowance. A Service member who moves from family-type Government quarters upon separation or retirement does not receive a partial dislocation allowance.
Q: May a service member receive a dislocation allowance if performing a PCS without relocating dependents?
A: Yes, a Service member relocating without dependents receives a dislocation allowance at the without-dependent rate. However, if the Service member occupies Government quarters at the new PDS, then the Service member does not receive any dislocation allowance
Q: How much is a dislocation allowance?
A: A Service member’s grade and dependency status on the PCS travel order’s effective date determines the amount of the dislocation allowance. See the definition of “Effective Date of PCS Order” in the JTR, Appendix A, and see the DTMO website for current and past dislocation allowance rates.
