Weight Allowance and Entitlements
The time to PCS has finally come and you're starting the planning process. You might have started purging your household goods, scheduling your movers, or checked out your next duty station! You have thought about every aspect of the move from start to finish, but you begin wondering if you will be overweight for your household goods! Your moving allowance is generally based on the overall weight of your HHGs. If you go over your weight allowance, it will be your financial responsibility to cover that extra cost.

Move.mil has an easy to use link to find out your allowance. Simply enter your rank, if you have dependents, and what type of move (CONUS or OCONUS) and it gives you a specific weight allowance. It also tells you what you are and aren't allowed to bring.
Once you know your weight allowance, you can use the weight estimator tool on Move.mil to get a rough estimate of how much your HHGs are. Remember, this is only an estimate to help you get an idea of your weight.

The easiest way to avoid going over your weight limit is to purge your belongings before your PCS. Get rid of things that you might not use anymore, things that don't work, clothes that won't fit, etc. You don't want any extra expenses such as covering the cost of your excess HHG weight during this busy time!
