Tips for your First PCS Move

As a Military family, you face unique challenges, especially with your first Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move. The process of relocating from one duty station to another can be stressful, especially if you're unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the Military moving process.
With the right tips and preparation, the transition can be a smooth process.
Here are five tips for a successful military PCS move.
5 Tips for PCS Moving:
- Label all items
Labeling your boxes with clear and concise signs will make unpacking a breeze. Be sure to label each box with its contents and which room it belongs in. This will save you time and headaches when you arrive at your new home.
- Avoid storage if possible
It can be tempting to use storage during your move, but if you can avoid storing your belongings, do so. This will make your move much easier, as you won't have to worry about items getting lost/damaged in storage, and saves you money.
- Claim your "pro-gear" for a military move
As a military member, you are eligible for certain "pro-gear" items, such as a utility trailer or hand truck, during your PCS move. These items can make a move much easier and are available to military members at no cost.
- Consider requesting a full/partial unpack
Many military spouses are unaware that a full unpack is included in the contract price paid to the carrier by the government. With the added pressure of a PCS move, and the possibility of your spouse not having time off to help with the unpacking, having the movers do it can be a lifesaver.
- Ask the movers for moving supplies
Moving can be messy, so it's always a good idea to have extra boxes, paper, and tape on hand. The movers may have these items they're willing to leave with you. This can come in handy when you're unpacking and organizing your new home.
