YOU'VE RECEIVED PERMANENT CHANGE OF STATION (PCS) MILITARY ORDERS, NOW WHAT?

A PCS military move involves leaving one duty station for a new one. If this is your first PCS, it can seem overwhelming. No need to stress, The PCS Pro Team is composed of military spouses from around the United States who have personally completed many PCS moves and are passionate about assisting you and your family throughout this process. Below are some tips we believe are very helpful for once you or your military spouse receive PCS orders for the first time.

FIRST STEPS AFTER RECEIVING PERMANENT CHANGE OF STATION ORDERS:

There are a few first steps you’ll want to make sure you acknowledge right after you or your military spouse receive PCS military orders.

  1. Visit your base transportation office: You'll need to find out your moving options as soon as possible.
  2. Notify your current housing office: They'll want to know your expected move-out date and you'll need to schedule a final inspection.
  3. Meet with your finance officer: It's important to get your finances in order before you move.
  4. Contact The PCS PRO Team: Trust us, we're going to be your new best friends for everything PCS move-related! We've had plenty of personal experience  PCSing so we know the support you need next.

YOUR NEXT STEPS

Before the packing even begins, gather the things you'll need during the relocation and for the first few nights in your new home. You'll be very glad you did! There are a few different moving options that the military provides you and your family with. To help save you time, we have included the options below:

  1. Household Goods Move (HHG): The military will hire a moving company to move your household goods.
  2. Personally Procured Move (PPM): This is the military version of a DIY move. The military will even pay you 95% of what it would cost them to hire movers. If you can do it cheaper, you get to keep the difference!
  3. Unaccompanied Baggage (UB): Some of your belongings are shipped immediately and the rest arrive later.

YOUR FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS

Most of your moving costs will be paid by the military, however, you're responsible for the rest. See why we suggested getting your finances in order?

  1. Personal & dependent travel: The military will pay travel, meal, and lodging expenses for you and your dependents.
  2. Household goods and vehicle shipment: The military will ship a certain weight of belongings for you. The weight limit is based on your rank. This is another time where NTS (non-temporary storage) comes in handy!
  3. Dislocation allowance: You can collect partial reimbursement for other PCS- related moving expenses.
  4. Temporary lodging reimbursement: If you take a house-hunting trip in advance of your PCS or need temporary housing until your new home is ready, you can receive partial reimbursement for those lodging expenses.
