How to Survive Your First Year as a Real Estate Agent
As in every new stage of life, beginning a career can be intimidating, overwhelming and even scary. The real estate industry can create many challenges for a new realtor such as competition, a growing economy, burnout, and unmet expectations. At the end of the day, you are human – it’s expected that you could get discouraged, but by using these six tips, you can create a rewarding, long-term career in real estate.
Have Goals
Create a defined goal for yourself in your first 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months. Even if they are modest, by setting these small goals, you will find joy and determination when you reach them. If you find that you aren’t reaching your goals, find out why and find ways that you can change your actions to reach your next goal. Goals help to motivate you and when you do achieve it, you will want to set a higher goal for yourself.
Build Your Network
Get your name out there. Building your network through word of mouth and social media is crucial to surviving your first year as a realtor. Make sure that you have a reliable list of people who can help you and give you guidance. Consider building nurturing friendships with other brokers, agents, mortgage lenders, contractors, or anyone in the field who also understands your stressors as well as your goals and dreams.
Accept the Reality of Long Hours
By accepting the reality of long hours, you are training yourself to be flexible and open. This will reflect in your attitude, your work environment and your sales. You may have to change your personal life plans, but in exchange you are building a strong reputation and higher commissions.
Know Your Market
It simply isn’t enough to know about the properties you’re helping buy and sell. You must be an expert in the entire market. Know the demographics, traffic patterns, trends, points of interest, property prices, and amenities nearby. This is not something that will be learned overnight but make it your goal to continuously gain knowledge of your market. Your clients will thank you.
Never Stop Learning
Just like any industry, real estate evolves constantly. Make sure you are current and up to date on everything in your market. Familiarize yourself with the latest technology including apps, websites and devices. If you aren’t familiar with something, don’t be afraid to ask. Find the answers from those who do know and have experience. Put yourself out of your comfort zone by joining and participating in industry organizations.
Keep a Positive Attitude
We know, it’s easier said than done. Keep a positive attitude and focus on what can and is going right instead of what could go wrong. Find ways to reward yourself when you meet a goal, learn a new skill, or your new clients go under-contract on their dream home.
Remember, your first year may be tough, but by surviving that year you are growing, thriving, and building a strong business. Focus on your attitude and your work habits. Lastly, give yourself a break every once and a while!
