PCSing and moving to a new state, city, or even country can be lonely if you don't know anyone. It's important to get involved in your community for many reasons. Not only will you meet new people, you will also learn more about where you live, what there is to do, become aware of events, and more!

We've compiled a list of 5 ways you can get connected to your community after a PCS move!

1. Join local Facebook groups: Whether you're a spouse or service member, there are likely many groups on social media for your new area. Simply use your search bar on social media platforms and search for things that interest you. Consider joining a spouse page, or even a local parent page! Joining a group on social media is a great way to get connected and learn from others who have been in the area for a while!

2. Volunteer: Volunteering is a great gateway to get involved in your community! Think of a few things you're passionate about and consider finding somewhere to volunteer your time and resources that interests you! If you're a parent, you can see what opportunities are available at your child's school or within the school system. If you like to give back, consider volunteering at a local shelter. Interested in animals? See what volunteer opportunities are offered at a local animal shelter! The options for volunteer work is endless, and you will likely meet people who share similar interests as you!

3. Make connections at work: Work is a great way to get connected to others because you spend several hours together daily! You can likely find someone who shares similar interests as you very quickly! This can lead to a great friendship, and you can often times learn about things going on in the community from someone who has been there for longer than you. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself to your new coworkers and share some things that you are interested in.

4. Get to know your neighbors: Take some time and introduce yourself to your neighbors! You'll likely be living next to them for little while, so you should get to know them! Take a treat over and say hello! Neighbors, especially those who have been there for some time, can be a great resource for information and things happening in your area.

5. Explore your new duty station: Get out in your new area and explore! Try local restaurants, sight-seeing locations, take your children to a park, visit the dog park with your pet; whatever you do, get outside and take it in. By exploring your new area, you're putting yourself in situations to meet new people and learn about things happening near you.

Whether this is your first PCS, or your 5th, remember to get connected and get involved!
